The 2nd Secondary School Summer Workshop of Gut and Microbiome and Disease Immunity 2024

Date: 02/10/2024

The 2nd Secondary School Summer Workshop on Gut and Microbiome and Disease Immunity 2024 was organized by the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The workshop aimed to educate students about the crucial roles of gut health and microbiomes in disease immunity. This interactive event provided a platform for students to learn from experts in the field and engage in hands-on activities. A group of five S.4 Biology students and another group of five S.5 Biology students participated in the workshop from July 23-25, 2024. Additionally, on August 3, we had the opportunity to visit the Yakult Hong Kong factory to learn more about the use of beneficial microbiomes in everyday products.

Our students engaged in fascinating hands-on experiments to distinguish between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. They cultured bacteria, examined their characteristics, and performed DNA extraction, PCR, and cytokine detection. In addition, a series of comprehensive lectures introduced students to foundational concepts of the gut microbiome, including its composition, functions, and significance in health and disease.

The workshop successfully engaged our students in important scientific discussions and hands-on learning experiences. By enhancing their understanding of gut health and disease immunity, the event inspired them to be the next generation of scientists and health professionals.
